OUR STORY
A Beginning with the Intention to Care
Studio butwhy began with a simple question every parent asks: What is my child wearing? The answer led us on a journey to rediscover how clothes used to be made, with intention, skill, and respect for both skin and planet.

THE BEGINNING
It Started With a Simple But Why?
Let me take you back to the day I was standing in a store, holding a small outfit meant for a child. At first glance, it looked perfectly fine. But the moment I touched it, something felt off. The fabric was artificial, almost lifeless. I checked the tag, only to find a list of materials I couldn't even recognise.
That moment made me pause.
Why are children, with skin so soft and sensitive, dressed in clothes made from petroleum? Why do some colours quietly hide harmful chemicals? And why does "easy care" so often mean adding more chemicals to the fabric?
Those questions led me back to a simpler, more honest way of making clothes, where cotton grows with rain, colours come from plants, fabrics are shaped by skilled hands, and every stitch is made with intention.
A way of dressing children that is gentle on their skin and respectful of the world they are growing into.

OUR JOURNEY
The Journey of a Question
The First Spark
It started with a simple classroom assignment. While studying design, a stubborn curiosity about the word "sustainability" led to a deep dive into the real difference between upcycling, recycling, and true conscious design.
Learning from the Roots
The focus shifted to the soul of Indian heritage. Working with traditional crafts like Kondapalli toys, Kalamkari, and Ikat provided a firsthand understanding of how sustainability has been woven into our culture for generations.
Challenging the Norm
For the final graduation project with Welspun, the challenge was to find nature in an industrial world. By merging biophilic design with recycled PET yarns, sustainability was brought into a product where 99% of the industry relies on plastic.
Testing the Boundaries
Curiosity expanded into every field from UI/UX to landscape design and wedding decor. The goal was to see if "green" design could exist in every stream of life, proving that conscious choices aren't limited to just one industry.
Why "But Why?"
Everyone asks what or how, but the most important question is Why? A digital journal called "but why with sanjana" was started to share these perspectives, questioning the intent and the reason behind the things we consume every day.
A New Direction
While sharing these thoughts, a common request kept coming from mothers: "Can we have something more ethical for our kids?" This spark led to a full year of R&D to ensure every step of a child's garment was safe and sustainable.
From Question to Reality
The journey came full circle with the launch of Studio butwhy. It's a brand built for the most curious minds on earth, the kids who ask "why" for everything, and the parents who want better answers for their future.
"We don't just make clothes. We ask why at every step. And when the answer doesn't serve our children or our planet, we find a better way."
